How It Works — in practical engineering terms

Split-chamber two-stroke cycle

A floating piston forms an upper pressure chamber that performs controlled internal charging during combustion and expansion.
The main crank piston delivers the power stroke while the floating piston shapes pressure rise and scavenging efficiency.

Benefits for large marine engines

  • ultra-high thermal efficiency at low shaft speed
  • controlled pressure rise rate → improved bearing and liner lif 
  • materially lighter block without sacrificing stiffness or fatigue margin
  • lower mean piston speeds → reduced wear and lubrication demand
